Configuration Guide Vol. 1

7.1.2 Stack and standalone

A switch state in which the stack function is not running is called standalone. Standalone appliances do not form a stack and always operate on one.

The Switch configures the stack by operating the stack function. To operate the stacking function, you must set the configuration command stack enable, save it in the startup configuration, and then restart the switch.

To return a device running the stacking function to stand-alone mode, you must first remove the setting from the configuration command no stack enable, save it in the startup configuration, and then restart the device.

If you need a feature that your stack does not support, use it standalone.
